John Drummond has been involved in opera for over fifty years. He first encountered the art-form at school, where he accompanied rehearsals of a production of The Marriage of Figaro, and was prompted to compose his first opera, which was put on with modest success. Since then he has worked as a repetiteur for professional opera productions in the UK, directed over 30 productions, composed seven full-length operas and nine short ones, and written a book about opera, Opera in Perspective. John finds opera the most challenging and most rewarding of musical activities. He retired in 2014 from the position of Blair Professor of Music at the University of Otago.
